2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8, 2024, the City of Vermilion will be in the path of totality. The partial eclipse will begin at 1:57pm, and totality will happen at 3:12:45pm to 3:16:45pm, with the partial eclipse ending at 4:29:45pm.

 

Understanding the path (band) vs. the center line.  

  • The band of totality is 124 miles wide.
  • The City of Vermilion is in the band of totality.
  • Edges of the band will experience a different view and lesser duration.
  • Areas on the centerline will experience the longest duration of the event.
  • Some areas in Lorain County are on the centerline of totality.

City Precautions:

  • City Parks will remain open for normal park hours.  NO OVERNIGHT PARKING.
  • The City Parks Department will not be allowing park or pavilion rentals for gatherings from April 6th through April 8th.  Pavilions will be open to the public on a first come basis. 
  • Public parking must be in designated parking spaces only.  Parking rules will be enforced. No parking on grass or other areas not designated for parking.  Do not park on private property you do not own. Codified Ordinance Chapter 452 Parking
  • City of Vermilion First Responders will be stationed throughout the city for prompt response.  
  • Vermilion Fire Department personnel will be stationed 24/7 through the eclipse weekend.

While the Eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8th, it is likely that many visitors will come in over the weekend and stay in the area. This could cause any/all of the following:

  • Difficulty accessing food, gas, and supplies due to traffic issues.
  • Increased traffic or jammed roadways.
  • Increased wait times for services such as hospitals, restaurants and gas stations.
  • Possible loss of cell phone signal due to system overload.

Residents can prepare prior to the event by using the following tips:

  • Stock up on food and drinks prior to the event.
  • Avoid scheduling appointments on Monday, April 8th (Doctor, etc.).
  • Gas up vehicles before the weekend (April 6/7).
  • Avoid travel over the weekend.

Eclipse viewing tips:

  • Staying close to home may be best.
  • If you travel, make sure to have plenty of gas.
  • Make sure to have eclipse glasses which are ISO 12312-2 certified and made in the USA.
